Privacy Policy

MusicTools ("the App") is developed by inyourcare ("we", "us"). This policy explains what happens to your data when you use the App.
Summary
MusicTools works entirely on your device. We do not collect, store, or transmit any of your personal data, and the App has no servers to send data to.
What the App stores, and where
- Sheet music files (PDFs) you import are copied into the App's private storage folder on your device, together with the practice settings for each song (tempo, time signature, page order and bar counts). When you import a PDF, the App reads its pages on your device to count the bars and find repeat signs, so it can fill in the page order and bar counts for you; nothing is sent anywhere for this. The same goes for a PDF you open in MusicTools from another app.
- Photos and scans of sheet music. When you make a sheet from photos or a scan, the App reads the pictures you picked or took on your device — to find the staves and straighten each page by them — and makes them into a PDF in the same private folder. It keeps a copy of each of those pictures (made smaller) beside it, so a page can be made again from it; deleting the song deletes them. It reads only the photos you pick; nothing is sent anywhere.
- Play-along tracks. An audio file or recording you add to a song is copied into the song's private folder.
- Your notes on the sheet music (pen, highlighter, and text you add in the sheet editor) are saved in the same private folder, along with a copy of the PDF with those notes drawn in, which the App shows during practice. Your original PDF is never modified.
- Your song library list (titles, folders, setlists, the songs you opened last) is kept in the App's local storage on your device, using Android/iOS's standard app-storage mechanism.
- Your recordings from the Recordings tab are saved as audio files in the App's private storage folder, together with their names, folders, and any melody transcriptions (notes/MIDI) you make from them. Transcription runs entirely on your device. While a recording is being made, the App also keeps a temporary copy of it in the same private folder, so the recording can be restored if the App is closed unexpectedly; the copy is deleted as soon as the recording is saved.
- None of the above leaves your device unless you choose to share or print it yourself (see below). There is no account system, no cloud sync, and no backend server operated by us or anyone else.
Face gestures
If you turn on Turn Pages by Face in Settings, the App uses your device's front camera to turn the page when you wink, move your lips to one side or turn your head. It is off until you turn it on, and off again every time the App starts.
- What is read. While it's on and a sheet is open, each picture from the camera is read on your device into numbers about your face at that moment: how far each eye is closed, where your lips are, which way your head is turned and how far it is from the camera. On iPhone and iPad this is done by Apple's ARKit face tracking; on Android by MediaPipe, software from Google that runs inside the App.
- What it's for. Turning the page, and nothing else. It is not used to recognize who you are, and not for advertising, analytics or anything else.
- Nothing is kept. No picture is saved, and the numbers are gone a moment after they're read.
- Nothing is sent. No picture and no number leaves your device. We, Apple and Google don't receive them, and they aren't shared with anyone.
- When the camera is on. Only while the switch is on and a sheet is open in front of you, and the App tells you so when it comes back on, or while the Adjust Sensitivity screen is open, where you can see how your gestures read. Leaving either turns the camera off. Locking the screen, leaving the App or five minutes with no face in view turns the switch off too, and it stays off until you turn it on again.
What the App does not do
- No analytics, crash reporting, or advertising SDKs are included. (The MediaPipe library comes with a usage report to Google of its own; it is switched off in the App, so nothing is sent.)
- No network requests are made by the App during normal use.
- The camera is used only while you scan pages of sheet music, to take those pictures, and while face gestures are on (see above). No contacts or location data is accessed.
- The microphone is used only while you are recording in the Recordings tab, and while the tuner is on screen, to hear the note you play; the tuner keeps nothing it hears. A recording you start goes on when you leave the App or lock the screen, until you pause or stop it (or a call or another app takes over the audio), and your device shows that the microphone is in use the whole time: the indicator in the status bar on iOS, a notification on Android. Recordings are never uploaded or analyzed anywhere but on your device.
- No data is sold or shared with third parties. The App never sends your data anywhere on its own.
Sharing and printing
When you tap Share PDF on a song in the Library or the viewer, or Share or Print in the sheet editor, the App hands a copy of that song's PDF (with your notes, or without them if you choose so) to your device's own share sheet or print dialog. Where it goes from there (an app, a contact, a printer) is your choice, handled by your device and the app or printer you pick. We never receive it. The same goes for Share Audio on a recording, Export MIDI on a transcription and Back Up Library, which makes one file of your sheet music, notes, settings and setlists (and the copies of the photos sheets were made from): the file goes to your device's share sheet, and only where you send it. Restoring a backup reads only the file you pick.
Permissions the App requests
- Files/documents access, only at the moment you choose a PDF, an audio file or a backup. This opens your device's normal file picker, and we only ever read the specific files you select. The App does not request or hold broad access to your device storage.
- Photos, only when you choose photos of sheet music: your device's photo picker opens, and the App receives only the photos you select.
- Camera, the first time you turn on face gestures or open Adjust Sensitivity and, on iOS, the first time you scan pages. On Android, scanning uses Google's document scanner, which takes the pictures itself and needs no camera permission from the App. You can turn the camera off at any time in your device's settings; everything except face gestures and, on iOS, scanning keeps working.
- Microphone, the first time you tap record in the Recordings tab or open the tuner. You can turn it off at any time in your device's settings; everything except recording and the tuner keeps working.
- Notifications (Android 13 and later), the first time you record. The notification shows that a recording is being made, or one is playing, while the App isn't on screen, with a button to pause it. Recording and playback work without it.
Uninstalling the App
Uninstalling MusicTools deletes all of its locally stored data (your imported sheet music, your notes on it, song settings, setlists, play-along tracks and your recordings) along with the app, per your device's normal uninstall behavior. We have no copy of it anywhere else, so nothing can be recovered from us after that, except from a backup you made and kept yourself.
Children's privacy
The App does not knowingly collect data from anyone, including children, because it does not collect data at all.
If you write to us
If you email us, with a question or to join a test of the App, we receive what you send: your email address and your message. We use them only to answer you. If you ask to join a test, we add the Google account address you give us to that test's list in Google Play Console and send you the invitation, and we delete it when the test ends. None of this comes from the App, which sends us nothing.
Changes to this policy
If MusicTools later adds features that change this (e.g. cloud backup, an account system), this policy will be updated first, and the date above will change accordingly.
